Josh Suereth

I am a software engineer, open source maintainer, and author. I served on the OpenTelemetry Technical Committee, driving telemetry standards, semantic conventions, and observability architecture across the cloud-native ecosystem.

Professionally, I work as a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google, focusing on distributed systems and agent observability.

Earlier in my career, I spent many years in the Scala and JVM ecosystem. I was a principal engineer at Typesafe (now Lightbend), the lead maintainer of sbt (the Simple Build Tool), and author of Scala in Depth (2012) and co-author of sbt in Action (2015).

My current technical focus centers on:

  • Observability by Design: Building semantic convention frameworks and automated code generation via tools like OpenTelemetry Weaver.
  • Systems in Rust: Exploring high-performance, low-overhead, safe, concurrent and observable systems.
  • Build and Tooling Ergonomics: Improving developer velocity, process resiliency and security.
